Invited guests included the Mayor of Newark Councillor Bryan Richardson and the Chairman of the Environment and Leisure Committee Councillor David Nixon who both made short speeches at the Ceremony. As has been publicised throughout the process of designing, siting and erecting the Arch, it’s motifs reflect elements of Newark past and present, including those listed below:

1. A Crown motif to reflect the Queen’s Jubilee    2. The top of the Mace if the Town Mayor of Newark, a position dating back to 1626

3. Reference to the Magnus School and its role in the life of Newark

 

4. Motif relating to the importance if the River Trent in the life and economy of Newark 

 

5. A roadway motif for the A1 Great North Road

 

6. An intersection of road, rail and the river reminds us of Newark’s central location

 

7. A violin motif reflects the international Violin School    

8. Front of Governor’s House (Baker’s Oven) reflects town’s association with monarchy

 

9. Organ pipes relate to the history and role of the church in Newark

 

10. Artist’s palette represents calibre of local artists such as Cubley, Kiddey and Nicholson

 

11. Musical notes remind us of the role of music and the town’s festivals

12. Sugar cubes relate to the current importance of the sugar beet industry

 

13. Grains and needle remind us of brewing and agricultural industry

14. Cog wheel relating to the past and current engineering industry in Newark 

15. Castellations symbolise the castle and its royal links
