HERCULES CLAY - SUNDAY 7TH MARCH 2010
Hercules Clay was Mayor of Newark in 1644, during the Civil War.
During the second siege of Newark, when the town was being bombarded by Parliamentary cannon, he dreamed that his house would be destroyed. He saw it as a premonition and moved his family to safety. Shortly afterwards the house was destroyed by a mortar shell.
In gratitude for his escape, he left two substantial gifts to the town in his will.
