She was born and raised in Bury but moved to Newark in 1960, aged 11, when her father became the borough water engineer. Mrs Crowe went to St Clare's convent school in The Park, Newark, until the age of 17. She began training as a nurse at the old Newark Hospital and later worked as a dental nurse for Graham Vanston and Colin Drummond on Castlegate. More recently Mrs Crowe worked at the Woolwich Building Society, retiring as a senior manager eighteen months ago.
Her Consort will be her husband, Mr Robert Crowe, whom she married in 1968. They met whilst working back stage on Newark Amateur Operatic Society's production of Oklahoma! in 1963, are still members of the society and musical theatre remains one of their passions, along with rugby. Mr Crowe is a past president of Newark Rugby Club and the couple follow the club home and away.
They have also been heavily involved in the Newark Twinning Association since it was founded 25 years ago and Mrs Crowe is the group chairman; the Oberburgermeister of Emmendingen, Newark's German twin town, Mr Stefan Schlatterer visited Newark especially for the Mayor Making ceremony.
In her year as Mayor Mrs Crowe hopes to focus on young people and is keen to visit schools, to let them see the regalia and robes, and talk about the civic side and history.
The Mayor's chosen charities this year are Rainbows Children's Hospice, Loughborough, which serves the Newark area, and Beaumond House Community Hospice, Newark.
Her chaplains are the Rector of Newark, the Reverend Vivien Enever, and Newark's Roman Catholic priest, Father Michael O'Donaghue.
The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Mr A Roberts.

NEW TOWN MAYOR - 2009
The new Mayor of Newark is Mrs Rita Crowe who was installed at the annual Mayor Making ceremony on Sunday 10th May 2009.
Mrs Crowe was previously the Deputy Mayor and is a Conservative Town and District Councillor.
