After discussions between the Town, District and County Councils a new location has been agreed and the eagle eyed will have noticed a new pit has been dug amidst the cobbles in the lay-by outside the Thomas Cook shop. Great care had to be taken when sinking the pit (which was hand dug) to ensure that neither utility cables nor pipes were disturbed, or historic relics unearthed. There was even suspicion that there would be cellars beneath the cobbles. In the event, no problems were encountered by LITE, the Town Council's Christmas Lights contractors. The pit is now securely set in concrete, surrounded by cobbles and covered by a heavy duty manhole cover. The tree, from Doddington Hall, will be securely erected shortly and then decorated with 500 'cherry lights' and crowned with a silver star. There will be a simple fence erected surrounding the tree, to discourage folk from touching the low voltage lights and tree branches, but which will allow full views of the illuminated tree. It is hoped that the decorated tree will be treated with respect and enjoyed by all, along with the Town's other seasonal decorations.

New Christmas Tree for Newark
Townsfolk may recall that there used to be a Christmas Tree erected in front of the Town Hall amidst the market stalls. Unfortunately, this had to be relocated and a smaller version was erected on the Town Hall Balcony.
