SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE

Start Date: 15/03/2022 00:00:00 - End Date: 15/03/2022 17:00:00

In the light of the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine, the impacts are now being felt in its neighbouring countries.

Newark has a longstanding twinning and friendship agreement with Sandomierz, a town situated in the South East of Poland.  In turn Sandomierz is twinned with a town in Ukraine by the name of Ostrog.

It is understood that some 1,000 refugees from Ukraine have already arrived in Sandomierz.  The Town Council in Sandomierz is supporting the refugees who have been displaced into their town and is also sending supplies and aid to Ostrog.

Newark Town Council is looking to provide support for Ukraine directed through its twin town Sandomierz.  Newark's Town Mayor, Cllr Lisa Geary, has said that our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Ukraine who are experiencing the terror and upheaval of this invasion.  It is hard to believe that this is happening in Europe in the 21st century; we can only hope that Russia stops this offensive before too many more innocent lives are lost.  On behalf of our town I would like to demonstrate support in a tangible way by raising funds that go to help the refugees already in Sandomierz and also to our friends in Ostrog.  If you would like to show your support then you can do so by the following means:

Bank Transfer to: Newark Town Council Account No: 05918898
  Sort Code: 54 10 23
  Reference: Ukraine Appeal

By cheque: Payable to Newark Town Council Town Hall
    Market Place
    Newark
    NG24 1DU

Or by cash to: Newark Town Hall Wednesday
    Thursday
    Friday
Between the hours of 10.30am to 1.00pm

The Chairman of Newark Twinning Association, Rita Crowe, has said that they are working with their sister twinning associations in Sandomierz and Emmendingen to find practical ways in which we can all support our friends in Ukraine and Ostrog in particular.  Newark Twinning Association will be making a donation through the Town Council's appeal and I would encourage the townsfolk of Newark to support this cause and show solidarity with all of our friends in our twin towns in Europe.
