What is a Neighbourhood Plan ?

A Neighbourhood Plan is a community led planning document. It lets local people help shape how Newark develops over the coming years.

It can set out where new homes, shops and workplaces should go, what they should look like, and which local green spaces and historical places should be protected.

Once it has been consulted on, independently examined and approved by a local referendum, it becomes part of the planning rules used to decide planning applications in the area.

Newark Town Council have put together a working party to create a plan, using the views of the community, sharing ideas and reflecting on what is important to Newark.

The Vision for the Neighbourhood Plan

The Newark on Trent Neighbourhood Plan will take a positive approach to development so long as it protects the historic buildings, public realm and green spaces whilst encouraging a sustainable balance of housing, employment, retail, community and leisure development that meets the needs of its residents and businesses. Development will maximise the environmental assets in the town, particularly the river, the parks and green spaces.

People will be able to cycle, walk or wheel safely and easily around and out of town. This makes the most of the town’s natural features whilst enabling a healthier lifestyle and reducing traffic congestion.

The riverside and the significant historic buildings and spaces will be a focus for regeneration and the marketplace will be a focal point for retail, commercial and social uses. The town centre will provide a diverse mix of places and spaces to shop, meet, live, work and study.

Businesses will grow as the area thrives, benefiting from the improvement made to the quality of the buildings and spaces and the access to a growing workforce of local skilled people happy to live, work and participate in the town.

Newark on Trent will be a growing visitor destination – the improved fabric of the town (historic, retail and social) will see an increase in tourism spending.
